Cocobowlz to open a smoothie and bowl shop in Columbia. Here’s where it’s headed

A restaurant that has grown steadily in the Upstate with acai bowls, smoothies and other goodies has now set its sights on Columbia’s Five Points district.

Cocobowlz, which started several years ago as a food truck and now has a host of brick-and-mortar shops in the Greenville area, said in social media posts that it is coming to Five Points. The shop will be located at 2015 Devine St., which is the former site of a Sub Station II restaurant. There are signs in the window at that spot that indicate Cocobowlz will open there.

“GAMECOCKS ARE YOU READY?,” Cocobowlz said in a post on Instagram. “We’re coming to FIVE POINTS!! We’ll be opening right next to INSOMNIA COOKIES on Devine St. Stay tuned for details.”

There are currently Cocobowlz locations in Greenville, Mauldin, Simpsonville, Clemson and other Upstate spots.

Cocobowlz specializes in bowls with a multitude of flavors. They typically come with a base of acai or pitaya fruit, and a host of toppings can be added. For instance, one menu item is the Unforgettabowl, which has almond shavings, kiwi, blueberries, strawberries, cacao nibs, goji berries, flax seeds, almond butter and honey drizzle. Another is the caramel apple bowl, which comes with granola, apple, banana, cinnamon and caramel drizzle.

The shop also has a number of smoothies and drinks mixed with fresh fruit.

The bowl and smoothie shop is heading to Five Points at a moment when the longtime shopping and nightlife district is going through a bit of transformation. Earlier this week the Five Points Association, which represents merchants in the district, named Heather McDonald, who has a long history in marketing and nonprofit work in the Midlands, as its new executive director.

And the district has welcomed a number of new restaurant and retail shops in 2022, including Japanese eatery FuruSato Bento, The Turning Pointe dancewear store, Botanica de Santee clothing and gift shop, Jack Brown’s Beer and Burger Joint, the Falafel King restaurant, Swiff Luxury streetwear store, Gameday Nutrition, Orangetheory Fitness, and the Flying Biscuit restaurant.

And in July, the Boyd Foundation and GrowCo announced a new tech incubator hub at 711 Saluda Ave., in the former White Mule live music space. The Boyd Foundation has donated $1 million to get that hub up and running.
