One person is dead after their vehicle veered off the road, hit a culvert and then burst into flames south of Aiken just before 11 p.m. Thursday, according to the Aiken County Coroner’s office.

The individual has not been identified by the coroner, and an investigation is still ongoing into the person’s cause of death.

The driver was the only occupant of the vehicle, and no other injuries were reported.

The crash occurred on Glenwood Drive, roughly 2 miles south of Aiken, when the driver’s four-door Toyota ran off the right side of the road and hit a culvert. The vehicle then overturned, hit a brick sign and burst into flames. The driver sustained “thermal injuries” and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the coroner’s office.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is also investigating.
