Ten women reported to law enforcement Friday they have received sexually explicit messages on their cellphones and on social media for months.

The women reached out to each other on social media after learning others had received similar messages, Lt. Ryan Flood of the Greenville County Sheriff’s Office said, and went together to the Greenville County Law Enforcement Center to report them.

The Sheriff’s Office immediately opened an investigation.

Lt. Ryan Flood said in a news release the messages were sent by one person through different social media platforms and then to the women’s cellphones. At least one woman reported receiving multiple texts and messages from different numbers.

Investigators do not yet know how the person got the women’s numbers.

“It is also believed that there may be victims who have received similar messages across the State of South Carolina,” Flood said.

He declined to release more specific information since an investigation is underway, such as if the calls were made at any particular time of day or if photos were sent.

Anyone who has received similar calls may report them at 864-23-CRIME.
