A restaurant just steps from Colonial Life Arena in Columbia has closed for now, but University of South Carolina officials said the space will reopen as an eatery early in 2023, with a new operator and a slightly different name.

1801 Grille announced Wednesday night on its social media channels that it had closed its doors. The restaurant has been located in the University of South Carolina’s 700 Lincoln development, directly across from the arena, since early 2017. Burke Hospitality Group, which once had a Harper’s restaurant in Five Points and currently has several restaurants in North Carolina, has operated 1801 Grille in collaboration with USC.

“After 6 years, we’ve made the difficult decision to close,” 1801 Grille posted on Facebook. “USC and (food vendor) Aramark are working with a new operating partner and will re-brand and open in the new year. We appreciate your support over the years and wish you a happy holiday season.”

1801 Grille, as it existed for the past six years, has been known for American and Southern fare, offering everything from oyster po’ boys to bison meatloaf to blackened red fish and beyond. As of Thursday morning, 1801 Grille’s website was off the web, and the spot had been removed from the roster of restaurants on Burke Hospitality’s website.

Meanwhile, USC spokesman Jeff Stensland confirmed Thursday that the restaurant space would reopen in 2023, potentially in late January or early February. Stensland noted the building is owned by USC and that the school contracts with Aramark for all food services.

According to a news release from Aramark, it has partnered with hospitality group Angell Bros. for the operation of the space. When the restaurant space reopens in the new year it will be called Angell Bros. 1801 Grille.

According to the release, “Jon and Dan Angell have been opening and operating restaurants throughout the Southeast for over 40 years. Jon currently owns the eight J. Peters locations, along with Rusty Anchor and Catfish Johnny’s on Lake Murray, and Bubba’s Love Shak in Murrells Inlet. Dan is the owner of five Copper River Grill restaurants and The RiffRaff Bar & Grill in Greer, SC.”

Their first partnership restaurant, Angell Bros. Bar + Grill, opened recently in Surfside Beach.

The release from Aramark said more info about the reopening will be forthcoming.
