One person has died in Richland County after their car left the road and struck a tree, the South Carolina Highway Patrol reported Saturday.

The Christmas Eve crash occurred at 6 a.m. on Heyward Brockington Road, about 4 miles north of Columbia, Highway Patrol Maj. Trooper Brandon Bolt said.

Only one car was involved in the crash, a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee, Bolt said.

The driver was heading east on Heyward Brockington Road Saturday morning, when their car crossed the center of the roadway, traveling off the left side of the road and struck a tree, Bolt said.

The driver’s name has not yet been released by the Richland County Coroner’s Office.

The crash remains under investigation by the S.C. Highway Patrol.
