Midlands man killed on hunting club land, SC coroner says

A Midlands man was killed Monday while hunting, the Kershaw County Coroner’s Office said.

Matthew Roach, a 40 year-old Elgin resident, died at the scene, Coroner David West said Tuesday in a news release.

At about 11:10 a.m. Monday, a 911 caller reported a man had been shot, according to the release.

The shooting happened on hunting club land in the 500 block of Shivers Green Road, West said. That’s a rural spot in the Ridgeway area of Kershaw County, between Interstate 77 and Interstate 20, not far from Lake Wateree.

Roach was a member of the hunting club, according to the release.

No other injuries were reported.

Information about the shooting was not available, but it is being investigated by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources and the Kershaw County Sheriff’s Office, along with the coroner’s office.
