Columbia airport deals with flight delays, cancellations amid national FAA outage
Several flights from Columbia Metropolitan Airport were delayed or canceled Wednesday morning amid a national Federal Aviation Administration computer outage.
Flights across the U.S. were halted early Wednesday amid the FAA system outage. According to The New York Times, the outage “left pilots, airlines and airports without crucial safety information.”
Columbia Metropolitan Airport spokeswoman Kim Jamieson Crafton said Wednesday morning that the FAA was working to get the system back online, and the agency was estimating that might happen at about 9:30 a.m. She cautioned, however, that it would take some time beyond that to get flights sorted out.
“Due to the nationwide Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) outage, there have been flights delayed from departing out of CAE,” the Columbia Metropolitan Airport posted on Facebook at about 8:45 a.m. Wednesday. “As of right now, the latest information from the FAA is that their systems will be restored by 9:30 a.m., however, this does not mean flights will resume at that time.”
Crafton noted airline customers should continue to check their flight status directly with their airlines. Flight information for CAE also can be found at flycae.com/flight-information/.
Crafton said a handful of flights from the Columbia airport made it out early Wednesday morning, including Delta flight 2696 to Atlanta and Delta flight 5524 to New York City. But several other flights that were scheduled for Wednesday morning out of Columbia were delayed or canceled.
”These type of things happen,” Crafton said. “They come up. What we would always say is pack your patience, show grace and know people are working behind the scenes to get things back up and running smoothly.”
