Richland 1 school district officials and the Columbia Police Department are investigating after several students at a local high school got sick after eating “edibles” at school.

“Eight C.A. Johnson High School students became sick at school (Wednesday) after ingesting edibles/gummies,” Richland 1 said in Wednesday afternoon statement. “Two students were transported to the hospital by EMS. Six students were assessed then released to go home with their parents.”

The district did not comment further on the condition of the two students who went to the hospital. The statement noted the Columbia Police Department was continuing to investigate the matter.

According to the American Addiction Centers, edibles, in many cases, are “food products that have been infused with marijuana.” They can include candies, gummies, baked goods, drinks and other forms.

C.A. Johnson High is located on Barhamville Road. It has an enrollment of just fewer than 400 students, per the U.S. News and World Report.
