One person is dead after being hit by a train overnight in Columbia, according to the Columbia Police Department.

A 64-year-old man died while reportedly walking on the tracks while carrying a bicycle near Erie Street and Interstate 26.

The train conductor operating the train involved in the collision reported that they sounded the train’s alarm and activated its emergency braking system before the collision, according to a statement posted to Twitter from Columbia police.

The Columbia Police Department’s traffic safety unit is investigating the death.
