A motorcyclist died in an early morning crash near Elgin after veering off road and hitting a tree, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

Around 1:10 a.m. Friday, 59-year-old Barry John Artlip of Lugoff was driving a 2007 Harley Davidson motorcycle traveling north on Highway Church Road toward Elgin when he veered across the right side of the road and struck a tree, according to Highway Patrol Lance Cpl. Tyler Tidwell. The Kershaw County Coroner’s Office identified Artlip.

Artlip did not stop at a stop sign and veered into a wooded area where he struck the tree, according to the coroner’s office. Artlip was not wearing a helmet and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the coroner.
