Busted Plug, a four-story steel fire hydrant sculpture and perhaps one of the most recognizable public art pieces in Columbia, is being moved from its downtown Taylor Street home and into storage as a new owner takes over the property.

The towering hydrant will be moved into storage while a new permanent home is found for it.

The Post and Courier first reported on the sculpture’s move.

South Carolina artist Blue Sky took 14 months to build the 40-foot tall hydrant, which was unveiled in 2001.

The sculpture has been a Columbia landmark for more than 20 years, and while some on social media celebrated the news of its removal, others are fighting to keep it in its original spot. As of Wednesday morning, about 300 people had signed a petition to “stop the destruction of the Busted Plug.”

It’s clear the sculpture has kept Columbians and visitors talking for decades.

But what other Columbia monuments, oddities or art pieces are quintessential to the Soda City? Do you have a favorite local mural? A sculpture you think is emblematic of Columbia? A roadside oddity you encourage all your visitors to check out before they leave?

Let us know what you think by responding to our poll. We’ll share the results in a separate story later.
