A motorcyclist was killed Friday morning near Columbia after colliding with another vehicle on Interstate 77, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

The crash occurred at 7:38 a.m. on I-77 North, near mile marker 6, about 1 mile east of Columbia, Highway Patrol Cpl. Tyler Tidwell said.

The driver of a 2012 Harley Davidson motorcycle struck the rear of a 2017 Jeep Wrangler as both vehicles traveled north on the highway and was thrown from the vehicle, Tidwell said.

The motorcyclist was taken by ambulance to Prisma Health Richland Hospital, where they were pronounced dead, Tidwell said. The driver of the Jeep Wrangler was not injured, he said.

The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating the fatal crash. The victim’s name is pending release by the Richland County coroner’s office.
