Lexington County official fired in special-called council meeting. Here’s what we know

Lexington County

Lexington County Council has fired its clerk.

The move came at the end of a specially called meeting Tuesday during which council members spent more than 30 minutes in a closed-door executive session discussing the “discipline or release of an employee,” according to the meeting agenda.

No details of the action were discussed Tuesday, as the council voted to “end its employment relationship” with council clerk Brittany Shumpert, “effective immediately,” and authorized council chairwoman Beth Carrigg to inform Shumpert. All members voted voted to approve the move except Scott Whetstone, who abstained for “personal reasons.”

Carrigg declined to comment, saying the county doesn’t comment on “personnel matters.”

The clerk is the administrative official who organizes meetings of the county council and prepares meeting agendas and other documents for the nine council members who oversee county government.
