Not a drill: Here’s when Columbia’s Drake’s Duck-In will open its temporary location
For more than a month, we’ve been living in a world without Drake’s Duck-In in Columbia.
But now the chicken is set to fry once again.
Drake’s, which closed its longtime location at 1544 Main St. on March 1 to begin a complete remodeling, is now set to open a temporary location at 1840 Hampton St. The temporary location will open on Friday, April 21.
Drake’s co-owner Daniel Boan said there have been a few small tweaks to the menu, but for the most part it will be “very familiar” for longtime customers.
The Hampton Street outpost of Drake’s will operate from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, at least at the outset, Boan said.
Drake’s has been around Columbia, at one location or another, since 1907. The restaurant has been at 1544 Main St. for 26 years. The building at 1544 Main St. was built in the 1870s, according to Historic Columbia. Uses for the building through the years have included a bookstore, beauty salons, a cafe and more.
The 1544 Main St. location closed on March 1 for a total renovation. Boan said contractors have informed him work will likely be completed on the remodel sometime in October. There also is work being done to convert the second floor of the building at 1544 Main into the Flutter Wing, which will be an outpost of the nearby Hotel Trundle.
Drake’s has long been known for its chicken filet sandwiches that come with two pieces of chicken on them, as well as burgers, hot dogs, fries and an extensive menu of breakfast biscuits. The State readers recently voted Drake’s as their favorite fried chicken place in the Midlands in an online poll.
