A gas leak has closed part of a road by the University of South Carolina campus in the downtown Columbia area Wednesday morning, officials said.

The USC Police called it a public safety incident in an alert, but no injuries were reported and there was no call for an evacuation, USC spokesperson Jeff Stensland told The State.

The 1400 block of Whaley Street was closed to traffic and people were asked to avoid the area by the USC Police. The gas line was cut at a construction site, Stensland said.

A crew working in the area hit a line, according to Mike DeSumma of the Columbia Fire Department.

Crews from Dominion Energy were on the scene to repair the cut line, according to DeSumma.

At about 11:15 a.m., USC Police said the public safety incident “ has been resolved. All streets have reopened.”
