What are the worst roads in the Midlands? Share your highway horror stories with The State
It’s OK to cuss. Or bang your fist on the steering wheel. Or even to look heavenward as you sit stalled in traffic, calling on a higher power to deliver you somewhere, anywhere, with a shorter commute and a few less steel plates in the roadway.
We’ve all been there, after all. It’s just part of driving in the Midlands.
The Columbia and Lexington area is one that has seen steady growth through recent decades, as South Carolina continues to be a — literal and metaphorical — hot spot for new residents. The Palmetto State saw its population swell from 4.6 million in 2010 to more than 5.2 million in 2020, per census figures, and the Midlands has grown right along with it. Richland County’s population now tops 418,000, while Lexington County is home to more than 300,000 people.
And with that growth, of course, comes traffic, crowded roads, backed-up intersections and increasingly worn out highways and streets. It can be the ultimate test of a driver’s patience, not to mention their tires and shocks.
So, The State wants to hear from you. Fill out the form below and let us know which roads are the worst in the Midlands. Whether you’re frustrated with the traffic flow on a given street or at your wit’s end about the potholes or general conditions of a particular road, please be as specific as possible and let us know which ones you think are the worst.
The form will be open until 11:59 p.m. on May 17. Your responses might be featured in an upcoming article.
