Two teenagers died Thursday night after a police chase in Greenville.

The car they were in hit a cement pillar beside the road, at least three telephone poles and a chain link fence.

According to the coroner, the car appeared to be cut in half.

The coroner’s office identified the teens as Dekiyas Antione Workman Jr, 16, and Jaedan Demone Pitts-Johnson.

Workman died at the scene; Johnson at Prisma Health Greenville Memorial Hospital. Another occupant of the car was taken to the hospital. Their condition could not be confirmed.

One person fled before officers arrived, but was found.

Greenville Police said in a statement that at about 9:37 p.m., officers saw a White Kia Forte that had been reported stolen on May 2. When the driver did not stop, the officers pursued. They lost track of the vehicle and stopped the pursuit, the police statement said.

Shortly afterward, they found the car had crashed.

The Highway Patrol is investigating.
