Two drivers died in Sunday evening crashes in Lexington County, SC Highway Patrol says

Two people died Sunday evening in separate car crashes in Lexington County, the South Carolina Highway Patrol said.

The first crash was about 6:15 p.m. when a 2014 Kia SUV traveling east on Pine Street near Thor Road ran off the road. It struck a culvert, overturned and hit a pole. Katie Lee Kelly, 26, of Salley, who was wearing a seat belt, died in the crash, the Lexington County Coroner’s Office said.

An adult passenger in the vehicle was taken to a hospital with serious injuries, while a child in the vehicle declined medical attention. Both were also wearing seat belts.

In a separate crash about two and half hours later, Walter Leighton King, 69, of Pelion was driving a 2009 Chevy sedan was killed in single-vehicle crash on Old Charleston Highway.

About 8:45 p.m., King was traveling north on Old Charleston Highway near Canal Drive when it ran off the road, struck a pole and overturned.

King, who was not wearing a seat belt, was alone in the vehicle.

Both crashes are under investigation by the highway patrol.
