Columbia parking tickets stacking up? City will forgive your late fees. What to know
The city of Columbia will forgive your parking ticket late fees, but only if you get to the city’s parking office during the month of July. And only if you’re ready to pay your tickets in full.
Any person with a traffic citation between 30 days and three years old can have the late fees on those tickets forgiven by visiting the the Columbia Parking Services office at 820 Washington St. between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. during the month of July. Online payments won’t be eligible.
People can apply for the late fee forgiveness one time and will need to provide either the citation or the vehicle plate number.
The catch is that the person will still need to pay the original parking ticket, otherwise the late fees will be added back to the account.
The move is part of a string of new initiatives from the city regarding parking enforcement. Earlier this year, WIS reported the city hadn’t collected on nearly $2 million in unpaid parking tickets.
Now, the city is planning to start sending unpaid tickets to collections and will also put an immobilizing device called a barnacle on vehicles with at least three tickets totaling $100 or more, the city’s parking services director told The State.
