Firefighter injured battling burning building where one person died, SC officials say
One person died and a firefighter needed medical treatment Tuesday at a home fire, the Orangeburg Department of Public Safety said.
At about 1:30 p.m., the fire department responded to a residential fire at a home on Mason Drive, the department of public safety said in a news release. That’s about 4 miles from MUSC Health Orangeburg.
There was a heavy fire in a multi-story home, and windy conditions caused the flames to spread rapidly, according to the release.
The fire was brought under control after about two hours, the department of public safety said.
The roof collapsed because of the fire’s conditions and one person died, according to the release.
The Orangeburg County Coroner’s Office has not publicly identified the victim or released a cause of death.
One Orangeburg DPS firefighter was treated for heat exhaustion by EMS, according to the release. Further information on the firefighter’s condition was not available.
No other injuries were reported.
Information about what caused the fire was not available, but the department of public safety said it’s considered an accident.
Other agencies that responded to the fire included the Orangeburg County Fire District, Jamison Fire Department, Canaan Fire Department, Bolentown Fire Department, North Fire Department, Cordova Fire Department, Orangeburg Office of Emergency Services, and Orangeburg County EMS.
