There’s a coffee changeover brewing in the suburbs outside Columbia.

Bart’s Crazy Good Coffee Shop in Chapin recently announced it had acquired another local shop, Tribal Coffee Co., in Irmo.

“In early August (Aug. 5th) Bart’s Crazy Good Coffee will be taking over the operation of what is currently Tribal Coffee Co. on Broad River Road in Irmo!” Bart’s recently posted on Facebook. “We can’t wait to bring Bart’s Coffee (and all of our crazy good coffee items) to Irmo!”

Tribal is located at 7949 Broad River Road in Irmo. The shop will be rebranded to Bart’s Crazy Good Coffee Shop in the upcoming switch. Bart’s will continue to operate its Chapin shop at 230 Columbia Ave., the business said on social media.

Tribal confirmed the coming changeover July 12 in its own Facebook post, saying that a chance encounter between the owners of the two businesses helped lead to the deal.

“So, it is with great excitement that we announce that beginning in August we will have a new name and a fresh leadership team serving the Town of Irmo Crazy Good Coffee,” the post from Tribal said.

Tribal owner Gabriel Penfield said in an email that the coffee shop was a product of the internship that he operates at his wealth management business in Irmo. He said more than 100 students from the University of South Carolina’s Darla Moore School of Business have passed through that internship program.

The Broad River Road spot where Bart’s is taking over Tribal is in the midst of a busy corridor. About 22,000 cars per day travel down that stretch of Broad River, per state Department of Transportation data.
