One person was injured Saturday night after an ultralight aircraft crashed in Newberry County.

Emergency officials responded at about 7:45 p.m. Saturday to Airport Road, near Newberry County Airport, after receiving a report of a crash, the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office said in a Sunday release. Deputies found an ultralight aircraft alongside the road, with two people on board.

Ultralights are small, lightweight aircraft that typically have one or two seats, according to the Experimental Aviation Association.

The pilot was not hurt, but the passenger was injured and was taken to a hospital, the sheriff’s office said.

“Preliminary investigation is the aircraft did not gain enough altitude to clear power lines and the pilot put the aircraft down to avoid the obstacle,” the sheriff’s office said in the release.
