Former SC congressman’s Lake Murray property up for sale for $9.5M

A 14-acre site with a prominent local connection and access to the Lake Murray shoreline is on the market for $9.5 million.

The Homeport at Lake Murray is one of the last “big water tracts” on the lake, according to the listing from Wilson Kibler, with 1,100 square feet of frontage on the lake shore.

The property is the former home of U.S. Rep. Floyd Spence, who represented South Carolina’s 2nd Congressional District — including his home in Lexington County — for 30 years from 1971 until his death in 2001. Spence’s family bought the property when he was a child in 1938, totaling more than 100 acres near the lake.

Spence lived in a house that dated to the 1700s. He purchased another 57 acres in the 1960s.

The area up for development doesn’t include the former Spence house. Instead, the 14.5-acre site is wooded, undeveloped land at the north end of Wise Ferry Road, according to aerial photos online. The property is about six miles northwest of downtown Lexington.

“The size of the property, the outstanding big waterviews, and the topography offer many possibilities for a unique buyer,” the Wilson Kibler listing reads.
