A new retail business is coming near Williams-Brice Stadium. Check out what’s being built
There will soon be a new place for football fans to gas up and grab snacks not far from the University of South Carolina’s Williams-Brice Stadium.
A Murphy USA gas station and convenience store is under construction at the southwest corner of Rosewood Drive and Bluff Road. That’s across the street from J’s Corner bar and restaurant and the South Carolina State Fairgrounds.
The new gas station will be a half-mile from Williams-Brice. The hulking football stadium is easily visible from the Murphy USA site.
An opening date for the coming Murphy USA store has not been publicly announced. Construction workers were active on the site when a reporter briefly stopped by Tuesday morning.
“Pardon our progress. See you soon!” reads a Murphy banner on a fence outside the construction site.
The Gamecocks’ first home football game is slated for Sept. 9 against Furman.
While the Bluff Road area near Rosewood Drive is especially busy during the seven Saturdays every year when USC has home football games and during the two weeks when the State Fair is on, it is a high-traffic area year-round. State Department of Transportation statistics show that about 21,000 cars per day travel down Bluff not far from the stadium.
There likely will be much development around Williams-Brice Stadium in coming years. Earlier in 2023, USC announced its intentions to eventually revamp the stadium and engage developers to overhaul nearly 900 acres of land the university owns near Williams-Brice. The university received more than two dozen proposals for the project, but no details have been announced.
