A new spot for ice cream, shakes, sundaes and more is coming to the Columbia area.

Handel’s Homemade Ice Cream will open in the Cardinal Crossing development on Forest Drive in Forest Acres, the city announced in an Aug. 25 Facebook post. The ice cream shop will be located in a storefront near the Clean Juice shop in the development.

The city said a lease has been signed for the Handel’s space. An opening date has not been announced, and plans for the shop still need to go through city approvals.

“Handel’s Homemade makes fresh ice cream every single day in each of their stores since 1945,” the city of Forest Acres said in its social media post. “They serve more than 100 flavors on their signature cones and dishes, Handel pops, hurricanes, sorbets, sherbets and ices.”

Handel’s was started by Alice Handel in 1945 in Youngstown, Ohio, according to the company’s website. The company now has franchise locations in Alabama, Arizona, California, Indiana, Nevada, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon and Pennsylvania.

The Cardinal Crossing development has a number of shops, restaurants and services and is located along a high-traffic area of Forest Drive. About 26,000 cars per day travel down Forest Drive near Cardinal Crossing, per the state Department of Transportation.
