A man is in custody in connection with a death in Sumter County.

Jacoby Richardson, 40, of Sumter, has been charged with murder in the case, according to a release from the Sumter County Sheriff’s Office.

At about 10 p.m. on Aug. 29, deputies received a report from a passerby that there was an unconscious man in the 900 block of David Austin Road in Sumter. Deputies arrived and found the victim, Bruce Bracey, face down in a yard and unresponsive. EMS personnel soon arrived and pronounced the victim dead. A sheriff’s office spokesperson said Bracey’s cause of death was strangulation, according to news station WLTX.

“During crime scene processing, it was apparent that someone dragged Bracey’s body a short distance and attempted to conceal the body,” the sheriff’s office said in a release.

In the ensuing investigation, Richardson was developed as a suspect in the case, and warrants were obtained for his arrest. He was taken into custody without incident on Sept. 6, per the sheriff’s office.
