National, Texas-based chain Whataburger has been on the move recently in South Carolina. Now another location is being planned in the Midlands.

A Whataburger location is slated for the Platt Springs Crossing project at Platt Springs Road and Old Orangeburg Road in the Red Bank area of Lexington County, according to information in the Lexington County Planning Commission’s September agenda packet. The Whataburger is listed in the commercial development section of the agenda, and the paperwork also indicates that fees were submitted in July for stormwater management and sediment control for the Whataburger.

The Platt Springs Crossing project encompasses nearly 60 acres in the Red Bank area and was announced earlier this year. It will ultimately include a host of commercial businesses, as well as a residential component, developers have said. The development is across the street from a Publix grocery store, as well as a Chick-fil-A that opened in 2022 and a Wendy’s that opened in August.

Whataburger has been busy making plans in South Carolina. Six other Whataburger locations have been announced this year in South Carolina, two in the city of Spartanburg, one in Boiling Springs, one in Duncan, one in Anderson and one in Greenville. And in the Midlands, Whataburger has plans for a location at 1185 Dutch Fork Road in Irmo.

The company was founded in 1950 as a roadside burger stand by Harmon Dobson in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Dobson died in a private plane crash in 1967, and his wife Grace took over the company. By the time she died in 2005 at age 80, the company had grown to 600 restaurants.

The family sold its majority interest in the company in 2019 to Chicago-based investment firm BDT Capital, which began the expansion program.
