A well-known Columbia church has purchased the building of a former movie theaterthat has been closed for more than a year.

Shandon Baptist Church bought the former AMC Classic 10 movie theater property at 5320 Forest Drive, according to a release from commercial real estate firm NAI Columbia. The site, which includes the former 10-screen theater, is nearly 7 acres.

“One of the golden rules in commercial real estate, and one that often still gets overlooked, is to always contact the adjacent property owners,” NAI Columbia’s Patrick Palmer said in a statement. “We are thrilled to walk away from this deal knowing that our client was able to achieve a positive outcome for a building that had narrow reuse potential. We look forward to watching Shandon transform the property as they grow their community and grow their home.”

Shandon Baptist owns the property adjacent to the former cinema, at 5250 Forest Drive. Monday’s release didn’t elaborate on the church’s plans for the theater site.

The AMC Classic 10 theater closed its doors in Sept. 2022 after a long run in the Forest Acres and Fort Jackson area. The theater had operated some form since 1996, according to the website Cinema Treasures. The theater was initially called the Wynnsong 10. In 2016, AMC acquired the theater and by 2017 had changed the name.
