A new spot focused on an extensive brunch menu will soon open its doors in Columbia’s Five Points, in a building that once housed an iconic tavern.

Ruby Sunshine, the New Orleans-inspired brunch spot that has locations across the South, will open Nov. 1 at 2030 Devine St. in Five Points, a company spokesperson confirmed. That location was formerly home to Yesterdays Restaurant and Tavern for more than four decades.

Yesterdays was known for its country cooking and unassuming bar, along with a mannequin cowboy in a bathtub above the front door. The restaurant and tavern officially closed in April 2020, amid the doldrums of the first year of the pandemic. It had been in business for 43 years.

Now a new restaurant is set to occupy the space at 2030 Devine. Ruby Sunshine, a restaurant that, along with its sister restaurant Ruby Slipper, has been growing across the Southeast. There are locations in Louisiana, Tennessee, Alabama, North Carolina, South Carolina and Florida.

Ruby Sunshine’s menu features a deep roster of pancakes, French toast, eggs Benedict dishes, sandwiches, omelets, cocktails and more. The restaurant has a number of specialties, such as the Bananas Foster French Toast, which includes “New Orleans-style French toast with rum-flambéed bananas and raisins served with Applewood-smoked bacon.”

“We are so thrilled to introduce our unique twist on brunch life to the people of Columbia,” Ruby Slipper CEO Elizabeth McGee said in a statement. “From beignets to egg ‘bennies’ to the best mimosas around, we’re bringing the signature tastes of New Orleans that South Carolinians will soon be craving.”

Ruby Sunshine is in the midst of hiring for the Five Points restaurant. Those interested can visit the company’s careers page at rubybrunch.com/join-our-krewe/.
