See the damage: Roof torn off, building collapsed from likely tornado in Midlands town
A tornado reportedly touched down in Bamberg, South Carolina, Tuesday, according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol and the Edisto Electric Cooperative.
Both entities shared photos on social media of severe damage to buildings and debris in the street.
“Well , we just had a tornado touch down right beside our headquarters in Bamberg!” the electric cooperative wrote on Facebook.
Brittany Glover with the South Carolina Highway Patrol posted several photos of damage in Bamberg County on the site X, formerly Twitter.
State Rep. Justin Bamberg also shared photos of the damage on social media, writing, “Formal statement coming soon, but as many have heard we suffered a tornado through downtown Bamberg this afternoon. No reported injuries, but very significant property damage. Stay away from any downed power lines, and look out for your neighbors, particularly the ones who lost their homes or the elderly. I am currently in route from the State House to lend a helping hand.”
Bamberg County is a mostly rural area about an hour south of Columbia.
The National Weather Service said “it’s very possible” a tornado hit Bamburg and weather officials would be investigating Wednesday to confirm whether there was a touchdown, according to meteorologist John Quagliariello.
The weather service Wednesday also investigated reports of possible tornadoes touching down near Lake Murray and in Lancaster County. Quagliariello added that the weather service has also received reports of downed trees across the state.
The weather service reported that it will likely finish its investigations by Wednesday evening.
