Lexington kindergarten enrollment starts soon but spots are limited. What SC parents should know
Parents who want to enroll their children in Lexington One kindergarten classes for the 2024 school year better do so soon.
The Lexington County School District One application process for 4-year-old and 5-year-old kindergarten enrollment opens at 8 a.m. on Monday.
However, the program for 4 year olds has limited space.
“Since each program can only serve a limited number of students, we are not able to serve all children who apply,” a Lexington One statement reads. “A list is created and acceptance is prioritized based on ‘most at-risk’ factors.”
Lexington 4-year-old program
If your child turns 4 years old on or before Sept. 1, they may be eligible for Lexington One’s 4-year-old kindergarten program. The district offers the program at all of its elementary schools. Besides meeting the above age requirement, students are only eligible for the program if:
- They live in the Lexington One attendance area.
- Meet the at-risk criteria eligibility for enrollment (at-risk is defined as “annual family income of 185 percent or less of the federal poverty guidelines as promulgated annually by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, or Medicaid eligible”). Children also qualify in cases of a documented developmental delay, potential developmental delay (screening results), placement in a foster home, or a child who is homeless. Documentation of family or child “most at-risk” conditions must be verified and kept on file for review.

Lexington 5-year-old program
Parents and caregivers should enroll their children in 5-year-old kindergarten if:
- The child turns 5 years old on or before Sept. 1.
- The child is zoned for a Lexington One elementary school.
If your child currently attends a 4-year-old kindergarten program in Lexington District One, you do not need to complete the online enrollment process for 5-year-old kindergarten.
