One dead, three others saved during water rescue, Columbia Fire Department says

One person died Sunday, but three others were saved during a water rescue near an apartment complex, the Columbia Fire Department said.

Tyler Boose, a 21-year-old Columbia resident, was identified as the victim, Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford said Monday afternoon.

The incident happened in a body of water described as a retention pond behind the Tropical Ridge Apartments on Stoneridge Drive, fire department spokesman Mike DeSumma told The State Monday. DeSumma said the pond is believed to be an old quarry, and it’s in the area between the Broad River and Saluda River.

At about 4:15 p.m., fire department crews responded to a call about a water rescue by the apartment complex, according to DeSumma. That’s near the intersection with Greystone Boulevard, and its exit on Interstate 126.

At the scene, firefighters were told about four people in the water — one person who jumped in and did not resurface, later identified as Boose, and three others who were trying to help him, DeSumma said.

The fire department’s crews entered the water and rescued the three people who were trying to aid Boose, according to DeSumma. The three people who were rescued did not require medical attention, DeSumma said.

Boose’s body was recovered, and he was unresponsive when turned over to EMS, according to DeSumma.

The coroner’s office was then called to the scene, DeSumma said.

The coroner’s office has not announced the manner or cause of death.

No other injuries were reported.

Information about the depth of the water where the body was recovered was not available.

The Columbia Police Department is also involved in an investigation into Boose’s death.
