Worker killed Saturday in accident at Berkeley Co. steel plant

A worker was pinned between two pieces of moving equipment and crushed to death Saturday at the Nucor Steel Berkeley plant in Huger, SC.

The man was identified by Berkeley County coroner Bill Salisbury only as a sub-contractor from out-of-state.

The accident occurred at 10:30am, Salisbury said. Rescue workers from Berkeley and Charleston counties worked for 6 hours to free the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

The federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration was notified of the on-the-job fatality and will assist in the investigation, Salisbury said.

Nucor Steel Berkeley produces about a million tons of steel beams a year that are used in among other things bridges, single family homes, farm equipment, ship, bleachers, and rail cars the Nucor Product reference guide said.
