Son of a biscuit! A new spot for breakfast, brunch has opened near Columbia. What to know
There’s a new player on the breakfast and brunch scene in the Midlands.
Vicious Biscuit, which has locations across several states, has debuted a new restaurant at 3246 Forest Drive in Forest Acres near Columbia. The new location is currently in a soft opening phase. There will be a formal grand opening on May 4, according to a post on Vicious Biscuit’s Facebook page.
The new Vicious Biscuit is in the former location of a Pizza Joint restaurant. The Pizza Joint closed in 2021.
The Forest Drive restaurant was busy on Monday morning when a reporter from The State stopped by, with diners partaking in the various decadent delights on the breakfast and brunch spot’s menu.
Highlights on the menu include biscuits such as The Flame Thrower, which features a cheddar and jalapeno biscuit with a crispy fried chicken breast tossed in Frank’s Red Hot sauce, with white cheddar cheese, a spicy remoulade and the restaurant’s famed candied bacon.
The menu also includes appetizers such as the Vicious Beignets, which are cinnamon cream cheese-filled pastries that are topped with whipped cream, fresh cut strawberries and a maple syrup drizzle.
On Monday morning, this reporter ordered the Fat Boy biscuit. That’s a buttermilk biscuit with a crispy fried chicken breast, pimento cheese and a spicy honey drizzle. The biscuit itself was a massive, dense-yet-still-fluffy affair accented with just the right amount of butter. The honey drizzle added an appropriate kick to the chicken, even though it was more sweet than spicy. The key ingredient in the affair was the pimento cheese. Sometimes pimento cheese can lean toward being a little too creamy. The sampling on this Fat Boy was perfectly cheesy and played well with the heat from the chicken.
There will be a number of activities for the Saturday, May 4, grand opening celebration in Forest Acres, according to a company spokeswoman. The store opens at 8 a.m. that day, and the first 100 customers will receive free biscuits for a year (one entree per month). There also will be a special “swag bag” with prizes for the first 100 customers at the May 4 celebration. There also will be live music and family activities on May 4.
There are a number of Vicious Biscuit locations, including spots in North Carolina and Florida, with a spot upcoming in Ohio. Other South Carolina locations include Mount Pleasant and Summerville.
“Vicious Biscuit has put the fun back in brunch,” company founder George McLaughlin told The State in a 2023 story. “That’s pretty much what we are. Everything is built around the biscuit. It’s a massive, fork-and-knife biscuit.
The Vicious Biscuit in Forest Acres is open from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, according to the company’s website and signage on the door at the restaurant.
