South Carolina health inspectors found multiple violations at restaurants in the Upstate in May, from live insects on walls to an employee with long fingernails mixing tortilla dough and flies in kitchens. The state each month releases grades and inspection reports for food establishments across Upstate counties.
Here are the restaurants that received some of the lowest ratings in May.
Sue’s Wings and Things at 4711 Hwy 81 N in Anderson
Sue’s Wings and Things had an inspection on May 29 and got a C grade.
An inspector observed improper cooking of chicken wings.
An accumulation of grime and food buildup was seen in several black plastic bins. Certain foods were seen not kept at proper holding temperatures. An accumulation of grime and food debris was seen on non-contact surfaces.
The restaurant had a required followup inspection on May 31 and got an A grade.
La Estrella Bakery at 635 NE Main St in Greenville
La Estrella Bakery had an inspection on May 22 and got a C grade.
An inspector observed an employee with long fingernails handling the dough for tortillas without gloves on. Also observed was an employee handling tortillas with bare hands.
Dishes were seen not sanitized after being washed and rinsed. Salsa and beans were seen cooling improperly in the walk-in cooler. Raw meats were seen being thawed in hot, standing water. A buildup of debris was seen on floors throughout the facility.
A required followup inspection has not yet been held.
Tato’s Pizzeria at 109 Miller Road in Greenville
Tato’s Pizzeria had an inspection on May 29 and got a C grade.
An inspector observed the presence of flies near unprotected food.
A plate of raw beef was seen stored on top of and in contact with cooked beef. A pizza tray was seen stored unclean. Certain foods were seen kept past their expiration dates.
A required followup inspection has not yet been held.
Waffle House at 801 Fairview St in Greenville
Waffle House had an inspection on May 14 and got a C grade.
An inspector observed live insects on the wall by the grills.
An employee was seen storing coats and bag on top of bread on the bread rack.
A buildup of debris was seen inside the ice machine. Certain foods were seen not kept at proper holding temperatures.
The restaurant had a required followup inspection on May 17 and got an A grade.
Garcias Cuisine at 1003 N Old Laurens Rd in Laurens
Garcias Cuisine had an inspection on May 21 and got a C grade.
An inspector observed flying insects in the kitchen. Also observed was an open bag of onions and an open bag of rice on the ground in the shed.
An employee was seen washing hands in the mop sink. An employee was seen handling raw meat and handle clean dishwater without washing hands and changing gloves. Multiple containers of salsa were seen kept past their expiration dates.
The restaurant had a required followup inspection on June 4 and got an A grade.
Tacos & Bla Bla Bla at 108 S Public Square in Laurens
Tacos & Bla Bla Bla had an inspection on May 1 and got a C grade.
An inspector observed an employee fail to use hand soap or paper towels when washing and drying hands.
An accumulation of food debris and grime was seen on dishes stored as clean. Certain foods were seen not kept at proper holding temperatures. Meat and seafood were seen thawing at room temperature. Grime and food buildup were seen on shelving.
