One person dead, another in custody following shooting on Columbia’s Garners Ferry

One man is dead and another is in custody following a Thursday night shooting at an apartment complex off Garners Ferry Road.

Five days after the shooting, the Richland County Coroner’s Office said 33-year-old Columbia resident Jose Osascio-Torres was the victim.

Columbia Police Department said on social media site X (formerly Twitter) that officers were called at about 8 p.m. Thursday to the Garners Crossing Apartments at 7651 Garners Ferry Road in reference to a shooting. When they got there, officers found an injured man.

Police Deputy Chief Melron Kelly told The State that Osascio-Torres died on the scene.

Kelly said Pedro Leon Rodriguez, 50, has been charged with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime in connection with the case.
