Unidentified body found after fire extinguished in South Carolina home, coroner says
A body was found inside a home following a fire in South Carolina, according to the Aiken County Coroner’s Office.
The fire happened Friday night at a home in the 500 block of John Nunn Highway, Coroner Darryl Ables said in a news release. That’s in the Salley area of Aiken County, about 20 miles from Exit 39 on Interstate 20.
After the fire was extinguished a male’s body was found inside the home, according to the release.
Because the body was so severely burned, the victim was not immediately identified, Ables said. An autopsy will be held in Newberry to determine the victim’s cause of death and to assist with identification, according to the release.
No other injuries were reported.
Information about the extent of damage to the home was not available.
Information about where the fire originated also was not available, but the cause of the fire is under investigation, the coroner said. There was no word if foul play was suspected.
The death is being investigated by both the coroner and the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office.
