Two I-26 interchanges set for closures as ‘Midlands Connection’ widening project continues
Work continues to widen Interstate 26 from Irmo to Little Mountain, and the S.C. transportation department has announced another round of closures along the 16-mile segment.
The Columbia Avenue exit, a key connection between Chapin and downtown Columbia, is set for another round of closures, as the eastbound on-ramp to I-26 at Exit 91 will shutdown at night for four days next week:
Monday: 7 p.m. (July 15) to 6 a.m. (July 16)
Tuesday: 7 p.m. (July 16) to 6 a.m. (July 17)
Wednesday: 7 p.m. (July 17) to 6 a.m. (July 18)
Thursday: 8 p.m. (July 18) to 6 a.m. (July 19)
A detour will route traffic to Exit 85 (S.C. 202).
Another round of closures is scheduled for next week a little further west.
The eastbound and westbound on-ramps to I-26 from U.S. 176 (Peak, Exit 97) are set for nighttime closures.
The schedule for the eastbound ramp closures:
Monday: 7 p.m. (July 15)to 6 a.m. (July 16)
Tuesday: 7 p.m. (July 16) to 6 a.m. (July 17)
A detour for the eastbound ramp will route traffic to the Columbia Ave.nue exit.
The schedule for the westbound ramp closures:
Tuesday: 7 p.m. (July 16)-7 a.m. (July 17)
Wednesday: 7 p.m. (July 17)-7 a.m. (July 18)
A detour for the westbound ramp will route traffic to Exit 101.
The westbound off-ramp at the Peak exit was closed for road work each week night this week, with that work scheduled to wrap up tonight with a final closure from 9 p.m. (July 12) to 7 a.m. (July 13). A detour will route traffic to the Columbia Avenue exit.
The Department of Transportation notes that the schedules of all these closures depend on weather.
Nighttime closures have been frequent at the Columbia Avenue and Peak exits so far this month. Keep an eye on the Department of Transportation’s social media for updates.
The work is part of the Midlands Connection project to widen I-26 from four lanes to six and eight lanes from Exit 85 in Little Mountain to Exit 101 in Irmo. All seven overpass bridges set to be replaced during the project are complete and open to traffic. The Columbia Avenue and Peak exits are two of three interchanges being modified as part of the project, which is scheduled to wrap up in December.
