Man tries to drive truck into Richland County Kroger, police say. Here’s what we know

AP

The Richland County Sheriff’s Department responded to an incident at a local Kroger on Sunday night that resulted in a man being charged and hospitalized, according to the incident report from the sheriff’s department.

Authorities originally responded to what they thought was an active shooter alert at the Kroger on Roberts Branch Parkway, off Killian and Farrow roads. Deputies confirmed it was not an active shooter incident, according to the report.

When authorities arrived, customers and employees were wrestling with 55-year-old Roger Dukes, who allegedly tried to hit pedestrians in the parking lot with his vehicle and then tried to drive his vehicle into the store, according to the report. He then went inside the Kroger screaming.

Dukes was taken into custody and was charged with assault and battery and aggravated breach of peace and was then hospitalized. He is being held at Alvin S. Glenn detention center, according to the report.

“We heard yelling and an employee came running by to the back and some customers were running behind,” said Susie Newton, who said she was in the back of the Kroger when the incident occurred. “No one from the store ever advised us as to what was happening — we didn’t really know what was going on.”
