Another detainee found dead at Richland County jail. Second death in a week

A second detainee has died this week at Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center, according to a news release from Richland County.

Lamont Powell, a 54-year-old Columbia resident, died at the jail on Tuesday afternoon, Richland County Coroner Naida Rutherford said Wednesday.

At around 2 p.m. Tuesday, jail staff discovered the detainee unresponsive in one of the facility’s open housing units, according to the release. The last time staff saw him alive was at 11 a.m.

The jail’s on-site medical team were unsuccessful with life-saving measures, according to the release.

The jail immediately went on lock down and contacted the Richland County Sheriff’s Department and Coroner’s Office, according to the release.

The jail is also conducting an internal investigation to determine any potential sources contributing to the recent incidents.

This is the second detainee death at Alvin S. Glenn this week. Marty J. Brown, a 25-year-old Columbia resident, was found dead in his cell at Alvin S. Glenn Monday morning around 11:15 a.m.
