Tropical system to likely bring harsh weather to SC Midlands, NWS says. When, what to expect
Chances of heavy rain and flooding across the Midlands into next week are growing with the rising threat of a tropical system in the Gulf, weather experts warn.
According to the National Weather Service in Columbia, there is 90% confidence that some sort of tropical system will form in the eastern Gulf of Mexico by early Sunday. The interaction of the potential tropical system and a stalled storm front will yield high rain chances on Sunday, with flooding concerns from I-20 eastward.
The Midlands could be soaked with more than 3 inches of rainfall between Sunday and Monday, the NWS states.
“There is quite a range of possible impacts, but heavy rainfall is the primary threat right now across our area, starting Sunday regardless of exact track or timing,” the NWS states.
But residents in the Midlands can expect a heavy dose of rain even before the tropical storm develops.
The NWS forecasts isolated severe storms on Friday. The Midlands are also currently under a heat advisory, with heat indexes projected to reach between 105 and 110 degrees.
An approaching front on Saturday will then bring widespread showers and thunderstorms across the Midlands, as well as the potential for flash flooding, the NWS states.
