Something big is being built on Columbia’s Sumter Street downtown. What to know

The Palmetto Citizens Federal Credit Union plans to build a 100,000-square-foot, five-story headquarters in downtown Columbia. The major project would take up three-quarters of the block bound by Sumter, Lady, Marion and Washington streets.

An office for Palmetto Citizens already is on the corner of that block and would remain as part of the larger project.

Two buildings on the block would be demolished to make way for the bank’s new headquarters, including one that houses The Toasty Hotspot restaurant and the real estate agency ROI Commercial. The Palmetto Citizens Federal Credit Union purchased the properties where both businesses are located in 2016.

The Capital Places apartment building at the corner of Lady and Marion streets would not be touched by the construction.

The bank plans also include mention of restaurant space and a fitness center, as well as a six-story parking deck large enough for an estimated 320 vehicles.

The plans must still be approved by the Columbia Planning Commission, which was expected to hear the case last week but that meeting was canceled due to concerns over impacts from Tropical Storm Debby. The plans will now be heard at the Planning Commission’s Sept. 12 meeting.
