A longtime restaurant space in Columbia’s Vista district is set to change concepts.

Taco Mundo Kitchen y Cantina is coming to the space at 828 Gervais St. that has been home to Liberty Tap Room for about two decades. There is a banner hanging at the restaurant announcing Taco Mundo is coming to the spot soon, and Vista Guild executive director Abby Anderson confirmed the change Thursday morning.

Taco Mundo Kitchen y Cantina and Liberty Tap Room are both restaurant concepts owned by Charleston’s Homegrown Hospitality Group. The group owns other nearby restaurants in the Vista, including Pearlz Oyster Bar and Kaminsky’s dessert shop. It also owns a Liberty Tap Room that operates at Lake Murray.

Liberty’s Gervais Street storefront closed in July, announcing on social media there would be “extensive renovations.” As it turns out, a change of culinary genre is upcoming.

While Liberty is mostly known for American fare, Taco Mundo Kitchen y Cantina offers a deep menu of Mexican favorites, including tacos, nachos and fajitas. They also have a thorough drink menu, with margaritas, tequila, wine, cocktails, beer and more.

There currently is a Taco Mundo Kitchen y Cantina location in Myrtle Beach.

“Liberty Tap Room & Grill is incredibly thankful for our loyal guests and employees who contributed to our amazing 20 years in the heart of the Vista,” reads a sign on the door at the Gervais Street spot. “We are now excited to bring our Taco Mundo Kitchen y Cantina concept to our corner of the vibrant Vista neighborhood!”

An opening date for the Taco Mundo Kitchen y Cantina in the Vista has not been publicly announced.

“I think having something new and fresh in the Vista is always a positive,” said Anderson, the Vista Guild leader. “Homegrown Hospitality has a great reputation and they’ve got multiple businesses right here within a block of each other (in the Vista) that have been successful. I think it is going to be fun to have a new Mexican flair here in the Vista.”
