Roaches all over, black fuzzy veggies & more in Upstate restaurants with worst August inspections

South Carolina health inspectors found multiple violations at restaurants in the Upstate in August, from scurrying roaches throughout kitchens to moldy vegetables. The state each month releases grades and inspection reports for food establishments across Upstate counties.

Here are the restaurants that received some of the lowest ratings in August.

Armstrong Inn & Suites at 4295 Augusta Road in Greenville

Armstrong Inn & Suites had an inspection on Aug. 30 and got a C grade.

An inspector observed living and dying cockroaches and flies.

Certain foods were seen not kept at proper holding temperatures. Cutting boards were seen with deep grooves that were not easily cleanable. A buildup of debris was seen on the grill station, coolers and cooking equipment.

A required followup inspection has not yet been held.

Church’s Chicken at 302 S. Pleasantburg Drive in Greenville

Church’s Chicken had an inspection on Aug. 6 and got a C grade.

An inspector observed an employee switch from sweeping to food handling without washing hands. Also observed was an employee touch dentures then handle food without washing hands.

A heavy accumulation of grease was seen dripping onto food trays. Chicken was seen not kept at proper holding temperature. A heavy accumulation of grease was seen on equipment and inside cabinets.

The restaurant had a required followup inspection on Aug. 16 and got an A grade.

Moctezuma Mexican Restaurant at 802 S. Batesville Road in Greenville

Moctezuma Mexican Restaurant had an inspection on Aug. 26 and got a C grade.

An inspector observed roaches near the cook line, back prep area and under a sink.

An employee was seen handling raw chicken, raw beef and then tortillas with the same gloves. Certain foods were seen not kept at proper holding temperatures. Grease and food buildup was seen on cooking equipment.

A required followup inspection has not yet been held.

Las Cascadas Mexican Restaurant at 301 E Main St. in Greenwood

Las Cascadas had an inspection on Aug. 12 and got a C grade.

An inspector observed vegetables with black and white fuzzy growth in the cooler.

A large container of shredded cheese was seen sitting on the floor. Raw scallops were seen above ready-to-eat food items in the cooler. The ice machine had an accumulation of a black slimy residue.

The restaurant had a required followup inspection on Aug. 16 and got an A grade.

Japan House II at 1703 John B White Sr Blvd in Spartanburg

Japan House II had an inspection on Aug. 8 and got a C grade.

An inspector observed frozen chicken being thawed at room temperature.

The facility could not provide documentation of parasite destruction for salmon used in sushi. Certain foods were seen not kept at proper holding temperatures.

The restaurant had a required followup inspection on Aug. 19 and got an A grade.
