SC brewery known for frequently collaborating with other breweries announces closure
A South Carolina brewery seen frequently on tap walls around the state is set to close at the end of the month.
Greenville’s Eighth State Brewing Company announced Friday that it is closing its doors. The brewery distributed frequently to the Midlands in recent years, particularly when it came to hazy IPAs and sour beers, and has been noted for its penchant for collaborating with other breweries — including national and regional heavyweights such as New York’s Other Half, Asheville’s Burial, Charleston’s Westbrook, Georgia’s Creature Comforts and Raleigh’s Altered States.
“Not all journeys are meant to last forever, and it’s with a heavy heart that we announce our time at The Eighth State is coming to an end,” the brewery posted to Facebook, noting that its remaining inventory is available for purchase and pickup through Sept. 28.
Eighth State didn’t cite any specific reasons why it is closing.
The brewery’s name was inspired by the psychological concept of the 8-circuit model, a way of understanding the human consciousness developed by Timothy Leary. The business moved into the former Upstate Craft Beer Co. space in Greenville’s Historic Claussen Bakery building in 2018.
