This SC Humane Society lost power after Helene. Here’s what happened to its 145 animals
When the Greenville Humane Society lost power during Tropical Storm Helene, the staff wondered what they would do with all those dogs and cats.
145 in fact.
It was hot, upper 70s, and muggy and everyone was just plain miserable.
Then the idea came.
What if they asked the community to step up and foster all the animals?
They put out the word and set up outside to process the outgoing animals if anyone showed up.
Well, show up is probably too weak a phrase to describe what happened next. Most were people who had never fostered a oet.
“We couldn’t have done it without them,” Emily Zheng, the marketing manager.
One by one, every animal was sprung from the dark and hot facility and went to an actual home.
Then the next morning, Humane Society staff went over to the county animal shelter, Greenville County Animal Care, to give them towels and blankets, and brought back some of their animals to send to foster homes.
Over the past two days, they have placed 250 animals. A few came back and adopted their foster.
Now that so many pets have left, the Humane Society needs crates, kennels, collars and leashes. Donations may be made at the facility, 305 Airport Road in Greenville, or cash donations only by card, Venmo or PayPal.
