Body found in Richland County river prompts investigation, South Carolina sheriff says
A body was found Tuesday in a section of the Congaree River that runs through Columbia, according to the Richland County Sheriff’s Department.
The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources said its officers recovered the body.
At about 6 p.m., deputies responded to the 600 block of Rosewood Drive after learning about the body, the sheriff’s department said in a news release. That’s close to the Jordan Memorial Boat Ramp on the Columbia side of the river, about a mile from Williams-Brice Stadium.
The person whose body was discovered has not been publicly identified by the Richland County Coroner’s Office.
An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death, according to the release. There are no obvious signs of trauma, the sheriff’s department said.
No other injuries were reported.
There was no word if the death might have been related to the storms in the Midlands caused by Hurricane Helene, but a flood warning was issued for areas along the Congaree River in Columbia. At least 36 people have died across South Carolina after Hurricane Helene.
Tuesday’s death continues to be investigated by the sheriff’s department.
