A well-known bank will close one of its branches in downtown Columbia.

The Wells Fargo location on the ground floor of the building at 1441 Main St. in Columbia is slated for closure, according to a sign posted on its door.

“On October 9 at 11:00 a.m., this branch location will close permanently,” the sign reads. “It’s been our pleasure to serve you here.”

Customers are being directed to the Wells Fargo location at 930 Assembly St. That’s about a mile away from the Main Street location.

The Main Street District, the merchant and property owners’ group for the downtown core, posted on Facebook Monday about the Wells Fargo branch shuttering. The district noted that, while the branch is closing, Wells Fargo will still have office operations in the tower at the southwest corner of Main and Hampton streets.

The district said in its post that the space the bank branch is exiting will be for lease later this fall and would be a prime spot for retail or restaurant use, with the potential for outdoor dining. There are numerous restaurants, bars, student housing developments, hotels, the Nickelodeon movie theater, shops and more within walking distance.

The Columbia Museum of Art is across Hampton Street from the space, and the popular Soda City Market lines Main Street every Saturday morning.
