Here are the best and worst Richland schools, a new SC state report shows
Parents are generally expected to keep a close eye on how their children perform in school.
But what about the schools themselves?
South Carolina education officials recently unveiled the school report cards for the 2023-2024 school year. Compiled by the South Carolina Department of Education, the report cards are designed to increase accessibility and accountability in the state’s public schools with easy-to-understand information.
Every high school, elementary and middle school in the state received ratings on a 100-point scale. The ratings follow terms outlined in state law — excellent, good, average, below average and unsatisfactory. Schools also received ratings on multiple indicators, including graduation rate, academic achievement and college career readiness.
Statewide, 18.4% of schools received an overall ranking of just excellent, lower than the 22.5% of schools that reached that level the previous year.
There were 477 schools that ranked average, a nearly 8% jump from the 442 in the prior school year.
There was a 20% rise in the number of schools with below average rankings year over year. However, there was also a more than 22% decline in schools with an unsatisfactory ranking, year over year.
But how did schools in Richland County perform?
Overall, Richland had a 46% decrease in the number of schools with excellent ratings, year-over-year. The county also had a 7% drop in the number of schools ranked good or average.
Below is a breakdown of how all schools in Richland County performed in the 2023-2024 school year, as well as how they performed the year prior.
