South Carolina health inspectors found multiple violations at restaurants in the Midlands in October, from rodent droppings to rotting fruit and improper use of fly poison. The state each month releases grades and inspection reports for food establishments across Midlands counties.
Here are the restaurants that received some of the lowest ratings in October.
Camden IGA Bakery and Deli at 1816 Jefferson Davis Hwy in Kershaw
Camden IGA Bakery and Deli had an inspection on Oct. 16 and got a C grade.
An inspector observed rodent droppings in the dry storage area. Also observed was fly activity in the deli and dining areas.
Chicken wings and fried chicken were seen not kept at proper holding temperatures. Cracked and missing floor tiles were seen throughout the facility. Also seen was low grout, and buildup on ceilings.
The restaurant had a required followup inspection on Oct. 21 and got an A grade.
Akina at 533 9 Bypass East in Lancaster
Akina had an inspection on Oct. 21 and got a C grade.
An inspector observed an employee handle raw chicken and not wash hands afterward.
Raw animal products were seen stored over ready-to-eat food throughout the kitchen. Organic buildup was seen inside the ice machine. Certain foods were seen not kept at proper holding temperatures.
Food was seen stored in t-shirt bags. Excessive grease and debris buildup were seen on the sides of fryers. Dirt and debris buildup were seen on hoods as well as inside the microwave. The floors, walls and ceiling had excessive dirt and debris buildup.
The restaurant had a required followup inspection on Oct. 23 and got another C grade. A second followup inspection has not yet been held.
Chen’s Garden at 1180 Dutch Fork Road in Richland
Chen’s Garden had an inspection on Oct. 4 and got a C grade.
An inspector observed pieces of chicken, steak, and shrimp not kept at proper cold holding temperatures.
Gaps around the edges of the back screen door that could let pests inside were seen.
The restaurant had a required followup inspection on Oct. 11 and got an A grade.
Paris Bánh Mi at 3071 Longtown Commons Dr. in Richland
Paris Bánh Mi had an inspection on Oct. 14 and got a C grade.
An inspector observed a grey and black substance on strawberries. Also observed raw meats stored over ready-to-eat vegetables.
An employee was seen changing tasks without washing hands. An employee was seen not properly sanitizing dishes. Cleaning agents were seen stored over food items.
A required followup inspection has not yet been held.
Super Acapulco at 510 Beltline Blvd. in Richland
Super Acapulco had an inspection on Oct. 14 and got a C grade.
An inspector observed facility using fly poison inside of the food establishment storage area. The container specifies not to use inside of commercial kitchen and to only be placed outside.
Prepackaged cakes were seen purchased from an unverifiable vendor. Chicken was seen stored above other proteins in the walk-in cooler. Dishes with label residue on them were seen stored as clean. Certain foods were seen not kept at proper holding temperatures.
The restaurant had a required followup inspection on Oct. 21 and got another C grade. A second followup inspection has not yet been held.
Golden China at 3150 Hwy. 21 in York
Golden China had an inspection on Oct. 2 and got a C grade.
An inspector observed raw shelled eggs stored above sauces in the cooler. Also observed black organic matter in the ice chute of the ice machine.
Certain foods were seen not kept at proper holding temperatures. Wire shelving was seen with an accumulation of debris.
The restaurant had a required followup inspection on Oct. 3 and got another C grade.
